An Old Roman Road

Mocrone to Aulla, 18 km, sunny but cool. Another wonderful walking day!

Views in Filetto, a charming town we walked through…if you zoom in you’ll see large black and white prints of people…residents I think….all along the route through town.

Views along the way…

A four stone crossing…

Via Francigena markings…how we find our way…along with Mike’s 5 other apps, maps, and guide books.

Most of our walking was in dense forest. Occasionally we would break out into a clearing…

Much of our walk was on an ancient Roman Road. Mike commented…”How do you describe what it feels like to walk on a road where people walked centuries ago, in sandals, slaves on bare feet…”

Some of it was tough going. In places where we couldn’t get around the massive puddles, we had to bushwhack but all in all, it was worth it.

We encountered few people and no towns after Filetto. The first was a friendly, pink haired woman searching for the regionally famous porcini mushrooms (she wasn’t having much luck.) We were startled a bit as she was off in the bushes and appeared rather suddenly. The others were fellow pilgrims.

Entering Aulla, we made our way to our Hotel Bed and Bike which is by far the nicest hotel so far. Here are a few pics…

Next stop….Sarzana!
