We were supposed to walk to Sarzana 17km 5 hours. Actually we walked 0 km, as we skipped the walk because conditions could deteriorate (probable moderate/heavy rain) and the already difficult (steep, with loose rocks) trail become treacherous; according to our host – avid mtn biker in the area . He recommended we skip this section. That, combined with the guide book(s) description gave us pause to consider taking a bus/train. The kicker was, upon reviewing maps of the hike, there are zero places to bail out IF conditions become too bad. Luckily, our host is the baggage hauler for the day and we snagged a ride to our next accommodation with him.
Arriving to our B&B in Sarzana early; the hostess said “ah, you cheated” in a perfect NY Italian accent. She lived there for 20 years before returning to Italy 14 years ago and opening the B&B. When we admitted our guilt, she laughed and promptly upgraded our room to one with a balcony, since it was ready even though we had not even asked to check in yet.
Had we not ‘cheated’ though, we would have missed a re-enactment of a medieval battle. The Battle of the Fortress of Sarzana.

Occurring all weekend long, it is just like the civil war re-enactments of the US. The participants are dressed in period attire, carrying period weaponry.
During the day there were mock duels … that at times were aggressive enough to almost appear real.

Folks carrying on normal life activities …

Meal times.

Squire polishing knights armour….
Weapons galore…

INCLUDING a working Trebuchet and functional cannons!

The Battle was well staged.

When it was all over, the good guys won … at least that’s what seemed apparent from the cheering and applause.
Another great day in the life of our two favorite peligrinos! Such adventures and unique days you are enjoying!
